What do you need to know to care for your 14 week old baby?

Development & Behavior

How should my baby be developing?

Baby now loves to touch you. In fact, tactile communication plays a very important role in the growth and development in children. All skin contact not only helps you and your baby bond with each other but also helps you soothe them when they are annoyed or feelirritable. They may wave their hands and pedal. When the baby’s hips and knees become more flexible, they will pedal more strongly.

In the second week of the 3rd month, your baby may be able to:

  • Laugh out loud;
  • Raise their head 90 degrees when lying;
  • Scream when they feel excited;
  • Hold their hands together;
  • Laugh in a natural way;
  • Follow objects at a distance of 15cm and move 180 degrees from side to side.

How to support my baby?

You should help children develop by letting your baby have skin contact with many different materials, such as fake fur, felt and cotton. At this age, babies can give anything on their mouth, so you should choose carefully and do not leave your baby alone to prevent them putting things in their mouths.

She may pinch her hands and hold or stretch the fingers simultaneously. Please encourage your baby to coordinate eyes and hands by holding a toy to see if she can get it or not. When you touch the baby by blowing gently or massage, holding them on one side or kiss the baby’s nose, these actions will help them relax and make your baby more close to you. It might even make them more alert and help them focus more.

To perform simple massage steps, put the baby on a flat and warm surface, a blanket on the floor mat, for example. Drop baby oil or vegetable oil on your palms, rub hands together to warm the oil and palm. Look into the eyes of a child, sing or talk to your baby while you begin to massage for your baby.

Pay attention to your child’s reaction. If they show no interest, you can try massaging lighter or stronger, or simply stop it. Many babies just need gentle caress.

Health & Safety

What should I discuss with my doctor?

Most doctors will not make an appointment or askperiodic health checks for your baby this month. But you can always call your doctor if you have any questions that can not wait until the next examination period.

What should I know?

Here are some things you should know about:

Missed dose immunization

If your child has missed one injections (eg vaccine tetanus, pertussis, polio), you don’t need to worry. The doctor will inject additional immunization that the baby missed. Whether your baby usually get mild fever or cold, your baby can still continue to get immunized safely and effectively. Ask your doctor if your child has:

  • High fever or any other disease;
  • Immune disorders, weakened immune systems or your child is using drugs to inhibit the immune system;
  • Epileptic;
  • Convulsions;
  • Drink steroid overdose within two weeks than in the previous three months;
  • Severe reaction to previous doses such as 40 degrees or higher fever, convulsions, crying or fainting.

Premature babies and babies who weigh less than 2.5 kg should be vaccinated according to schedule as full-term infants, unless your doctor has instructed.

Nutritional supplement with milk

Cow milk is a great drink for children and the elderly, however, cow’s milk does not contain the necessary nutrients for infants. They contain a lot of salt and protein than breast milk or formula, so milk is not good for the baby’s kidneys.

Cow milk is deficient in iron, also deficiency of the other components of milk compared with breast milk or formula. Besides, they may cause mild intestinal bleeding in a few babies. So if you are planning to supplement nutrition for infant with other milk than breast milk or formula as recommended by the doctor, wait until they are a year old to start doing this.

Take less shit than before

Status that many infants breastfeed  start distributing less than a day, even a few days to go once during a period of one to three months old is a very normal thing. The reason is that when they are bigger, they eat a lot of food more, the baby’s digestive organs have to digest more than what they eat but excret less.

These babies who are breastfed could take shit more than usual. This is not unusual. Babies who are breastfed rarely get constipated. Irregular going to stool is not the sign of constipation, we will identify whether the child is constipated or not when the child’s stool is hard and they find it difficult to release stool out of body.

My Concerns

What I am concerned about?

Here are some things you may be concerned about:

Put your baby to bed

Many mothers often try not to sleep while feeding their baby or try to wake their baby up when the baby sleeps and sucks. You should put the baby to bed when the baby’s awake,so later when weaned, the baby can sleep without nursing or bottle-feeding. It will be more realistic if you wait until your baby is 6 to 9 months old and has less feeding than to teach your baby to sleep without the breast or bottle. And when kids get used to it,then they’ll totally be able to sleep quickly after weaning. However, whenever there is a chance, put the baby down for a moment. Keep stroking, feeding or singing lullaby to make your baby drowsy and fall asleep easier.

In the same room with the baby

In the first month or the second month, you will be extremely busy as always in the care of the baby. You will have to feed your baby, change diapers and cuddle whatever day. Some parents give the baby to sleep in the same room, so they can look after their baby at their convenience and comfort. But if you do not intend to let your baby share a room indefinitely, then split into separate rooms when they are in the last phase when they need frequent feeding at night (usually at around 2-4 months of age ). After this time, that the baby shares a room can cause some problems as follows:

  • Baby sleeps less than before. When sharing the room with the baby all night, you’ll try holding your baby up to appease them when your baby is unsettled. This can disrupt your baby’s sleep. Moreover, they often create a lot of noise when sleeping. Most babies sleep easily again in a few minutes without being appeased. So if you pick them up immediately when they moan, you might accidentally disrupt your baby’s sleep.
  • Parents are lack of sleep. The fact that you’ll have to carry her up more often at night to let the baby sleep in the same room means that you will sleep less.
  • Less sex. How you can comfortably spend time with your partner when the baby is right next to you?

To let the baby share a room for a long time also can cause you to have difficulty in sleeping in comparision with that you let your baby sleeps in another place later.

If they had to share a room with another child in family, the sleeping arrangements should depend on two babies’s sleeping habits. If either or both of them tend to wake up at night, you will be struggling for some time until the baby learns to sleep while the other children are still awake. You can split or separate bedrooms to restrict noise to create a private space for bigger kids.
