Refrained From Taking Insulin – Teenager Died Due To Misleading Herbal Doctrine

Last Monday, as a result of denying the administration of insulin, Timothy Morrow (picture) who proclaims himself as a ‘Master Herbalist’ was sentenced to 4 months of prison and 48 months on probation after he was found guilty of child abuse and practising medicine without license which led to the death of a 13 years old teenager.

Edgar Lopez who died in August of 2014, was a type 1 Diabetes Mellitus patient, a form of Diabetes which is caused by the failure of the Pancreas to produce Insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is important for the regulation of blood glucose as it enable cells of the body to use glucose in the blood, bringing down the level of glucose as a result. Hence, those with Diabetes Type 1 need Insulin injection as the deficiency of the hormone is the principle problem of their condition.

Maria Madrigal, Lopez’s mother, is an avid follower of Morrow’s seminar and she was told to stop giving Lopez Insulin as Morrow claim that the Insulin she has been receiving from the hospital are poison. Instead, she was told to rub Lavender oil on Lopez’s spine and to keep on consuming the prescribed herbal medication from Morrow which, according to him, would cure his condition for the rest of his life.

Initially, no problems occurred with Lopez but not long after, 2 months before his death, Maria noticed that Lopez’s condition worsen and his Diabetes symptoms started to reappear. What’s worse, Lopez started to have breathing problems and stiffness. However, Morrow assured the family that this was just a process known as ‘Healing crisis’ and he told them to give Lopez some reflexology treatment to remove toxins from his body.

According to the father, Delfino Lopez Solis, the family has been ‘brainwashed’ by Morrow and that Morrow came to visit them for a few days leading up to Lopez’s death. According to them, when Lopez’s breathing became shallow, Morrow told them to open the window to allow more air to come in, still refusing to let the family call 911. Only after Lopez’s breathing became much more shallow and slow, Morrow told them they could call the authority. Unfortunately, Lopez was not able to be saved and he died the next day at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

In his website, Morrow claimed that using his herbal medicine and diet, he was able to cure himself from Prostate cancer. Morrow also sells variety of supplements, laxatives, herbs, protein powder and a product called Pancreas Reg which he claim to be ‘God’s Insulin’. However, the product comes with a disclaimer saying that it has never been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and that the product was not meant to treat, cure or prevent any diseases. Morrow also uploaded videos of him claiming that Insulin is poisonous to the system and that tumor is a gift from god.

Morrow was ordered the remove videos which advocated for the replacement of hospital medications with herbal ones and that if he was found to cause the death of anyone else in the future, he will be charged with murder. As a form of compensation, Morrow was told to pay RM 20 000 (USD 5000) to Lopez’s family to cover for the fine and funeral cost.
