Uses

What is Bentyl® (dicyclomine) used for?

Bentyl® is commonly used for treating symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Bentyl® is an anticholinergic. It works by blocking a chemical in the smooth muscle of the stomach and intestines, causing them to relax, which reduces cramping.

How should I take Bentyl® (dicyclomine)?

Use Bentyl® as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

Bentyl® is usually given as an injection at your doctor office, hospital, or clinic. If you will be using Bentyl® at home, a health care provider will teach you how to use it. Be sure you understand how to use Bentyl®. Follow the procedures you are taught when you use a dose. Contact your health care provider if you have any questions.

Bentyl® is for intramuscular (IM) injection only. It is NOT for intravenous (IV) use.

Do not use Bentyl® if it contains particles, is cloudy or discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged.

Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Ask your health care provider how to dispose of these materials after use. Follow all local rules for disposal.

The injection form of Bentyl® is only given short-term when the oral form cannot be taken. Your health care provider will prescribe the oral form of Bentyl® as soon as you are able to take it.

Use Bentyl® on a regular schedule around the clock, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

How do I store Bentyl® (dicyclomine)?

Bentyl® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Bentyl® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Bentyl® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Bentyl® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Precautions & warnings

What should I know before using Bentyl® (dicyclomine)?

Before using this drug, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because, while you are expecting or feeding a baby, you should only take medicines on the recommendation of a doctor.
  • You are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, such as herbal and complementary medicines.
  • You have allergy with any of active or inactive ingredients of Bentyl® or othe medications.
  • You have any other illnesses, disorders, or medical conditions.
  • You have chronic inflammation or ulcers of the bowel, diarrhea, enlargement of the prostate, hiatal hernia, kidney or liver disease, a nervous system disease, overactive thyroid, or urinary blockage or retention.
  • You have heart disease, heart failure, a history of rapid heartbeat, or high blood pressure.
  • You are at risk for glaucoma.
  • Bentyl® may cause drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or lightheadedness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Bentyl® with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.

    Check with your doctor before you drink alcohol or use medicines that may cause drowsiness (e.g., sleep aids, muscle relaxers) while you are using Bentyl®; it may add to their effects. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines may cause drowsiness.

    Bentyl® may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting; alcohol, hot weather, exercise, or fever may increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects.

    Do not become overheated in hot weather or while you are being active; heatstroke may occur.

    Bentyl® may make your eyes more sensitive to sunlight. It may help to wear sunglasses.

    Use Bentyl® with caution in the elderly; they may be more sensitive to its effects.

    Bentyl® should not be used in children younger than 6 months old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.

    Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

    There are no adequate studies in women for determining risk when using Bentyl® during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Please always consult with your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before taking Bentyl®. Bentyl® is pregnancy risk category B, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

    Side effects

    What side effects can occur from Bentyl® (dicyclomine)?

    Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome:

    • Blurred vision
    • Constipation
    • Decreased sweating
    • Difficulty sleeping
    • Dizziness
    • Drowsiness
    • Dry mouth
    • Headache
    • Lightheadedness
    • Loss of taste
    • Nausea
    • Nervousness

    Seek medical attention right away if any of these severe side effects occur:

    • Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue)
    • Agitation
    • Confusion
    • Diarrhea
    • Difficulty focusing your eyes
    • Difficulty moving
    • Difficulty speaking
    • Difficulty urinating
    • Disorientation
    • Exaggerated sense of well-being
    • Fainting
    • Hallucinations
    • Pounding in the chest
    • Rapid heartbeat
    • Short-term memory loss
    • Unusual weakness
    • Vomiting

    Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

    Interactions

    What drugs may interact with Bentyl® (dicyclomine)?

    Bentyl® may interact with other drugs that you are currently taking, which can change how your drug works or increase your risk for serious side effects. To avoid any potential drug interactions, you should keep a list of all the drugs you are using (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. For your safety, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any drugs without your doctor’s approval.

    Products that may interact with this drug are:

    • Amantadine, antiarrhythmics (e.g., quinidine), antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine), benzodiazepines (e.g., diazepam), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) (e.g., phenelzine), narcotic pain medicine (e.g., meperidine), nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide), nitrites (e.g., sodium nitrite), phenothiazines (e.g., chlorpromazine), sympathomimetics (e.g., pseudoephedrine), or tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline) because they may increase the risk of Bentyl’s side effects.
    • Metoclopramide or phenothiazines (e.g., chlorpromazine) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Bentyl®.
    • Digoxin because the risk of its side effects may be increased by Bentyl®.

    Does food or alcohol interact with Bentyl® (dicyclomine)?

    Bentyl® may interact with food or alcohol by altering the way the drug works or increase the risk for serious side effects. Please discuss with your doctor or pharmacist any potential food or alcohol interactions before using this drug.

    What health conditions may interact with Bentyl® (dicyclomine)?

    Bentyl® may interact with your health condition. This interaction may worsen your health condition or alter the way the drug works. It is important to always let your doctor and pharmacist know all the health conditions you currently have.

    What is the dose of Bentyl® (dicyclomine) for an adult?

    The recommended initial dose is 20 mg four times a day.

    After one-week treatment with the initial dose, the dose may be increased to 40 mg four times a day unless side effects limit dosage escalation.

    If efficacy is not achieved within 2 weeks or side effects require doses below 80 mg per day, the drug should be discontinued. Documented safety data are not available for doses above 80 mg daily for periods longer than 2 weeks.

    What is the dose of Bentyl® (dicyclomine) for a child?

    The dosage has not been established in pediatric patients. It may be unsafe for your child. It is always important to fully understand the safety of the drug before using. Please consult with your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

    How is Bentyl® (dicyclomine) available?

    What should I do if I miss a dose?

    If you miss a dose of Bentyl®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
