Uses

What is nattokinase used for?

Nattokinase is an enzyme extracted from a popular Japanese food called natto. Natto is boiled soybeans that have been fermented with a bacterium called Bacillus natto.

Nattokinase is used for cardiovascular diseases including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, chest pain (angina), deep vein thrombosis, atherosclerosis, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, poor circulation, and peripheral artery disease.

It is also used for pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, muscle spasms, infertility, cancer, and a vitamin-deficiency disease called beriberi.

How does it work?

There are not enough studies about how nattokinase works. Please discuss with your doctor for more information. However, it is known that nattokinase decreases the ability of blood to clot. This “thins the blood’ and might protect against conditions caused by blood clots such as stroke, heart attack, and others.

Precautions & warnings

What should I know before using nattokinase?

Consult with your doctor or pharmacist or herbalist, if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because, while you are expecting or feeding a baby, you should only take medicines on the recommendation of a doctor.
  • You are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription.
  • You have allergy with any substances of nattokinase or other medications or other herbs.
  • You have any other illnesses, disorders, or medical conditions.
  • You have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals.

The regulations for a supplement are less strict than the regulations for a drug. More studies are needed to determine its safety. The benefits of taking this supplement must outweigh the risks before use. Consult with your doctor for more information.

How safe is nattokinase?

Nattokinase is likely safe when taken by mouth in amounts commonly found in foods. Nattokinase is a natural component of the soy food natto. It has been routinely consumed in Japanese cultures for hundreds of years.

Nattokinase is possibly safe when taken by mouth as medicine. Taking two doses of a specific product containing nattokinase seems to be safe. However, it is not known if taking more than two doses is safe.

Special precautions & warnings

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: There is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking nattokinase if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

Bleeding disorders: Nattokinase seems to act like a “clot thinner” and might make bleeding disorders worse. Use with caution.

Surgery: Nattokinase might increase the chance of bleeding too much during or after surgery. Stop taking it at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.

Side effects

What kind of side effects may I have from nattokinase?

If you have any concerns about side effects, please consult your doctor.

Interactions

What interactions may I have with nattokinase?

Nattokinase may interact with your current medications or medical conditions. Consult with your doctor before using.

Products that may interact with nattokinase include:

  • Anticoagulant / Antiplatelet drugs

Some medications that slow blood clotting include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others.
