By

Vertigo brings about the sensation of dizziness which restraints people from performing well at their work or study. Thus, tips on how to overcome vertigo are necessary.

What is vertigo?

Vertigo is a condition in which people have the feeling that the world around them is spinning. Problems in the inner ear results in vertigo.

Causes of vertigo

As mentioned above, inner ear’s problems bring about vertigo. Those problems include:

BPPV

BPPV is the short form of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. When the BPPV occurs, some calcium deposits or particles fall into the canal of the inner ear. The ear, then, sends wrong signals to the brain, making people lose their body’s balance. There are no exact reasons for BPPV. It may be a problem of aging.

Meniere’s disease

It is believed that this condition happens when fluids accumulate in the ear influencing its normal pressure.

Vestibular neuritis

Viral infections are the most common cause of this ear problem. When vestibular neuritis occurs, it causes inflammation, affecting the inner ear’s nerves which are responsible for maintaining the body’s balance.

Treatment for vertigo

Sometimes, vertigo will go away without any specific treatment. On the other hands, in many cases, vertigo needs to be treated properly. Treatments depend on the causes leading to vertigo.

Vestibular rehabilitation

The vestibular system is in charge of sending signals about the body’s movements to the brain. Thanks to this, the brain knows and adjusts to keep people balanced. Vestibular rehabilitation is a kind of therapy that help the vestibular system get stronger.

Canalith repositioning maneuvers

This therapy is designed to cope with BPPV. It includes a set of  head and body movements to make the calcium particles get out of the inner ear chamber. Then those particles are absorbed by the body. This therapy requires instruction from specialist for the safest and most effective result.

Medicines

If the vertigo is caused by viral infections, the person will be prescribed with antibiotics or steroids. These substances can deal with the swelling and fight infection.

With Meniere’s disease, doctor may provide patients with diuretics to cope with fluid buildup.

Surgery

In some other cases, the patients may need a surgery to overcome vertigo.

This is because sometimes, vertigo is caused by underlying problems such as tumor or injuries in the neck or in the brain. At this point, only surgery to remove those factors can help the patients.
