What causes thyroid problems?

It is hard to say a particular risky behavior is a main reason for thyroid disorders. Because every single kind is caused by a list of harmful factors.

Hyperthyroidism

The overproduction of thyroid hormones in your body will occur in several ways:

  • Graves’ disease
  • Toxic adenomas: Nodules develop in the thyroid gland and create much thyroid hormones than before. This condition is the main reason to damage the chemical balance of your body. How about the origin of nodules? Some goiters may be blamed for them.
  • Subacute thyroiditis: It is the inflammation of the thyroid. As a result, your gland secretes excess hormones abnormally.       At that time, your hyperthyroidism may last from a few weeks to months.
  • Pituitary gland malfunctions or cancerous growths in the thyroid gland: This condition is not always the key because it is quite rare when compared to other risk factors.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a medical name for underproduction of thyroid hormones. Causes of hypothyroidism may come from:

  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Removal of the thyroid gland: Your thyroid gland may have been removed in surgeons to cure another illness or destroyed by chemicals.
  • Exposure to excessive amounts of iodide: A high level of iodide intake may come from some different reasons, such as medicines and certain contrast dyes given before some X-rays. If you once get thyroid disorders, you yourself may raise the chance of getting exposed to it again.
  • Lithium

To newborns and infants, hypothyroidism poses a special danger to their health, particularly a poor appetite, in active and quiet state and excessive sleeps. It can be due to these causes:

  • A pituitary disorder
  • A defective thyroid
  • Lack of the gland entirely
