Together with the female reproductive system, the male reproductive system plays a vital role in the survival of the human race by producing offsprings. Since it is located outside the body, it is vulnerable to injuries and many other medical conditions.

Infection

The seeds of life – sperm is produced by the testicles, which are kept inside a bag of skin called the scrotum. The sperm, contained in a fluid called semen, goes through a complicated system of tubes, from the testicles to the head of the penis to be ejaculated. Every single part of this complex structure could be infected by bacteria or viruses. Infections at this area can damage the reproductive ability of the man, even result in permanent infertility.

Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy

Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy occurs when the prostate glands swell up. It usually happens to older men, 50 years old or more. A warning sign of BPH is the slow urinary flow, urinary retention or the need to push when urinating. The cause of BPH has not been fully understood. Fortunately, it is a curable condition, which can be fixed with medications and surgery.

Cancer

One of the most common cancer in reproductive organs is prostate cancer. Men who have prostate cancer often experience urinating difficulties, backache and painful ejaculation. Cancer can also occur in the testicles, causing them to swell up and hurt. If the male contracts HPV, the virus causing cervical cancer in females, he might develop penile cancer.

Infertility

Infertility refers to the inability of a male to get his female partner pregnant. There is a wide range of causes for infertility, including:

  • Genetic factors resulting in low sperm quality
  • Blocked sperm delivery tubes
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Certain medications

Penile problems

Erectile dysfunction, roughly translated as the inability to get the penis hard long enough for sexual intercourse, can make compromise the man’s fertility. In can result from medical conditions such as high blood pressure, overweight, diabetes, disorders of the nervous system, certain drugs and mental issues such as anxiety and stress. Erectile dysfunction can be treated with medications and surgeries.

If you notice any of the alarming symptoms above, or if you think something is wrong with your reproductive system, you need to seek medical attention as soon as possible. You may feel embarrassed at first, but think of it like any other medical conditions. The sooner it is treated, the fewer complications it leaves, and the faster you will get well.
