According to the World Health Organization (WHO) data of the most polluted cities and towns, the eastern Mediterranean and Southeast Asia regions have the worst outdoor air pollution in world. India alone tops the list with six of its cities are in the top 10 of the world most polluted cities. There are a lot of factors causing this huge man-made situation. Smoke produced by cars, buses and airplane are clouding in the air especially in the big towns and cities. Burning down forest as well as open burning cause some mess to the air condition directly. Other than that, unfiltered smoke from factories and industrial facilities also affecting the quality of the air that we are depending on.

Effects of air pollution

Harmful gases such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide can cause so many diseases to human. In fact, 1 in 9 deaths happened worldwide caused by air pollution alone. 1.4 million deaths happened every year as a result of stroke and 2.4 million deaths happened due to heart disease. WHO did mention that low and middle-income countries have high exposure to air pollution rather than high income countries. People that exposed to the polluted air either outdoor or household air pollution are at the high risk of having other chronic diseases such as lung cancer and respiratory infections including pneumonia.

Ways that help reducing air pollution

There are some sustainable ways that we can apply to at least reduce the risk of having such disease as well as maintaining the well-being of the earth. Firstly, use and encourage other people to use electric-generated public transports provided in towns and cities instead of driving private cars. This helps in reducing the fine particles in polluted air. Second method which helps to reduce smoke is by using renewable energy sources such as wind turbines as implemented by France and Canada to generate energy or using solar energy harvested from sun light like the way Germany and China are doing. Thirdly, changing from diesel fuel to compressed natural gas (CNG) to reduce carbon dioxide emission. Diesel fuel releases more black carbon which make the environment more polluted. In addition, CNG can replace diesel, gasoline and propane and produces less harmful gases during fuel combustion.

Natural disaster often occurred whenever unnatural activities are uncontrolled and indeed affected human life. History teaches us that few decades back whenever a nuclear reactor was shutdown at the Chernobyl Nuclear Facility in Ukraine, radioactive substances were spread through the air and caused 4000 cancer deaths related to the polluted air around that nuclear facility. Environmental care is vital to keep the well-being of the planet earth itself and the good quality of human life.
