Many people still have to face with massive breakouts even when they teenage years have gone. In fact, adult acne is a common skin condition. According to a study of American Academy of Dermatology, about half of adults age 20 to 29 suffer from acne breakouts. In this article, we will learn about the five reasons causing adult acne.
Hormonal change during menstruation
Acne breakout usually happens on females who are in their 20s to 40s because the body’s hormone levels change during their menstruation. Usually, before or at the beginning of the periods, these acne breakouts tend to be worse. Hormonal acne is very difficult to prevent because it is controlled by the body’s hormone production. However, some medical managements can be applied to treat these acne. Low-dose estrogen or progesterone birth control pills, an anti-androgen medication spironolactone, or a combination of both are the most effective therapies. The effect of these medications will be better if used in combination with a suitable prescription of topical medications.
The changes of stress hormone levels are another cause of adult acne. When you are stressed, the adrenal gland produces the stress hormone cortisol to help your body deal with stress. In this process, a tiny amount of testosterone unfortunately leaks out. This male hormone can cause the oil glands in women’s body to release more oil, which mainly leads to breakouts. Therefore, if your stress level is high, you are more likely to experience adult acne.
Diet plays a crucial role in adult acne breakout, compared to other causes. Specialists say that dairy and simple carbohydrates are foods that medically relate to this skin condition. However, it isn’t recommended to practice dietary restrictions against acidic or inflammatory foods without the recommendation from your doctors.
The most common type of nutrient that causes acne is iodine. It can trigger the acne breakouts in almost everyone if eaten enough. Iodine is usually found in shellfish like lobster, shrimp, crab, and some greens like kelp and spinach. It takes weeks and months before iodine begins to leave any effects on the skin, which is the difference between iodine and other “acne-causing-foods”.
Acne is sometimes the symptoms of allergies such as allergies to chocolate, fried foods, pizza, caffeine, nuts, and dairy product. Doctors usually advise to stop using foods that cause your body allergic reactions.
Ingredients in beauty products such as shampoo, facial cleanser, blush, etc can be the cause of adult acne breakouts. For example, makeup products without non-comedogenic label and hair styling products can cause the pores to be clogged and then lead to the blemishes at the area of using. If your beauty products are causing you acne, it is recommended to stop using these products to avoid further breakout. Additionally, treatment for this type of breakout often contains glycolic or salicylic acid.
Air pollution can contribute much to your breakouts because it just puts layers of dirt and bacteria on your skin, especially when you live in big cities, where the air is severely polluted. You can use a toner pad or a face wipe to wipe your face after going out to see what’s on your face. If you go out without any production, the chance of getting acne is higher.
