The first thing many people need in the morning may be a hot mug of coffee. Caffeine in coffee may help you fight against sleepiness and make you feel energized. However, using caffeine can lead to vicious cycle. Fortunately, there are natural ways to stay awake. Do you want to know what they are? Follow the article.
Wake up and walk around
A brisk 10-minute walk can increase oxygen in your brain, veins, and muscles. Thus, it can boost your energy. This energy can stay for even hours. If you work at a desk, keeping your eyes on a computer screen or papers, you can stand up then walk for a few minutes frequently. At break time, you can also walk to a restaurant for a meal or bring your homemade meal with you to a nice place to eat (garden, balcony, or top floor). You do not have to walk outside. Walking around your office can make you feel more refreshed, too.
Eat healthy foods to get more energy
Low blood sugar can make you feel tired and make it hard to focus on study or work. Sugary foods can quickly increase your energy. You can try foods that provide energy but also good for your health. These foods include:
- Fresh fruits
- Whole wheat crackers
- Celery sticks
- Low-fat cream cheese dip
However, do not eat too much sugary food, they can raise your blood sugar levels.
Have some chitchat
If you are sleepy, start a conversation with a friend or colleague. You can talk about everything you are interested in, from fashion, foods, to business, politics, religion. This will keep you awake while giving you some fun and sometimes, information, too.
Make use of breathing technique
Taking a deep breath can help increase blood oxygen levels. This can make your heart beat slower, lower your blood pressure, promote blood flow, and boost energy.
To take an ideal deep breath, you have to inhale to the abdomen. You can do this exercise anywhere at any time. To start the exercise, sit straight. Place one hand on your belly. Inhale through your nose until you feel the movement of your belly. Your chest should not move. Then breath out through your mouth.
Get some light
Turn on the lights in the room or increase the intensity of them. You are more likely to feel sleepy in environments with dim lighting. That is why you should turn off the lights when you go to bed. Bright light can help you fight against sleepiness and make you feel more alert.
Daylight can help influence your sleep-wake cycle. You should spend time outside, such as doing exercises, walking around the park, or go to the balcony for fresh air.
You may stick to coffee in order to combat sleepiness. But it can cause insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, or stomach upset. To avoid these conditions, you can try these natural methods. They are safe and effective.
