10 ways to soothe a sore throat


Having a sore throat can be very annoying, especially when your job requires you to talk a lot. If you have not got the time to drop by your doctor, you can go for home remedies and over-the-counter drugs first. Here are 10 ways to soothe sick throat:


You probably have Advil pills somewhere in your house already. Advil is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that contains both anti-inflammatories and pain killers. It will reduce the swelling and make you feel better.


Scientists believe that gargling with warm salt water a few times a day can ease the swelling and loosen mucus, tackling irritants and bacteria. Half a teaspoon is enough for one cup of water. You can add a bit honey to soften the taste, but remember to spit it out after gargling.

Cooling sprays

Cough sprays are more effective if they contain cooling ingredients such as menthol or eucalyptus. Even though they do not really cure your sore throat, they can help keep your pain at bay so that you can continue working.

Cough syrups

Cough syrups may relieve the soreness in your throat by coating it, providing a temporary effect. If you ar going to work, use a non-drowsy syrup.


If you have an irritated throat, it is important to drink plenty of fluids to keep it moist. Water works wonder. But if you want something more interesting, you can switch to fruit juice or even chicken broth.

Herbal tea

Tea is full of antioxidants which can strengthen your immunity and protect you from infection. A warm cup of tea offers immediate soothing effects for a sore throat.

Chicken soup

Eating hard food can be a big problem when your throat is sore. It is advisable to switch to liquid nourishment so that you get the nutrients you need without too much suffering.


There has not been any study or trial into this matter, but the sap from marshmallow plant has been used as a medication coughs, colds, and sore throats for centuries. Modern marshmallows are not as good, but they can do the trick, too.


When it comes to infection, getting plenty of rest is the nicest thing you can do for your body. Sore throats are mostly caused by cold viruses. A well-rested body will have more chance at defeating them.


If your sore throat stems from a bacterial infection, antibiotics are the only choice left. However, remember to finish the whole course of medication even if you have started to feel better after the first dose.
