What is meloxicam?
Meloxicam is among the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is used to help patients with rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and osteoarthritis to cope with their pain and inflammation. Meloxicam is now available in the form of regular tablets and orodispersible (melt-in-the-mouth) tablets.
How does meloxicam work?
Meloxicam works by suppressing the effect of cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzymes. COX assist the production prostaglandins in injured or damaged areas. Certain prostaglandins are the culprit of pain and inflammation. With that property, meloxicam saves a patient from severe pain and inflammation.
What do I need to know before taking meloxicam?
As we all know, we can only use certain types of medicine if they are confirmed suitable for our medical conditions. Some specific medicines even require extra care. Thus, before going under medication with meloxicam, your should inform your doctor if you:
- Are pregnant, have plan of getting pregnant, or are nursing your baby
- Are a smoker
- Are taking certain medicines, including those in doctor prescription, herbal or complementary medicines.
- Previously had a stomach ulcer or any inflammatory bowel disorder
- Previously had a blood clotting problem
- Previously had allergic reactions to any medicines, especially NSAIDs
- Have any liver or kidney disorder
- Have any cardiovascular problem
- Have high blood sugar, high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels
- Have systemic lupus

How should I take meloxicam?
In addition to the doctor’s instruction, you need to carefully read the information leaflet of the manufacturer. It usually comes along inside the package. Through this leaflet, you will know more about the medicine, with all the possible side-effects.
Follow strictly the instruction of your doctor, in terms of the dosage.
For meloxicam tablets:
The tablet must be taken after a snack or a meal. While swallowing it, you need to swallow the whole tablet with plenty of water.
For melt-in-the-mouth (orodispersible) tablets:
Take a gulp of water first to moisten your mouth. Carefully take the tablet out of its package without moistening it. Put the tablet on your tongue and let it slowly dissolve. Wait about five minutes then drink plenty of water and finally swallow the dissolved tablet.
Do not try to chew or swallow the tablet if it has not yet dissolved. Try to take the medicine at the same time each day. If you happen to forget a dose, make up for it right after you remember. If you miss a day, just skip that dose. Do not double the dose.
How should I store meloxicam?
Keep them out of your children’s reach and sight.
Keep them in cool, dry place. Do not expose them to direct heat and light.
Keep the medicines in their original package.
