What is muscle contraction tension headache?
Muscle contraction tension headache is usually known as a normal headache. It is the most common headache among adults and teens. If you experience this headache, you may not have severe diseases. But it is chronic and can repeat many times. The symptoms can come and go.
When a muscle contraction tension headache comes, it may stay from 30 minutes to couples of days. An acute muscle contraction tension headache does not need treatment but a chronic one may require medical attention because it can lead to stress and depression.
What are the symptoms?
A muscles contraction tension headache can be described as daily chronic pain. Common symptoms of this condition include:
- Pain in the head that can range from mild to severe. Pain can be felt on both sides of the head.
- Tightness or pressure around the head. You can feel like a tight band is wrapped around your head.
- Tightness in the neck and shoulder muscles
- Pressure and warmth behind your eye

Muscle contraction tension headache usually causes no severe problem, except for pain and discomfort. If the headache affects your life and or you cannot complete daily tasks as usual, you should see a doctor. Or if your headache changes and you think it is not the normal headache you used to have, you should not ignore. It may be related to some neurological problems such as tumor or blood vessel disease in the brain.

- Severe headache
- Stiff neck
- Difficulty speaking
What are treatment options for muscle contraction tension headache?
You can treat muscle contraction tension headache with medications. These medications can help ease pain and prevent this condition from recurring. However, medications have side effects. Thus, do not take them too often. You should also be careful if you are pregnant or have other medical problems.
- Over-the-counter such as ibuprofen, aspirin, acetaminophen can be found at the drugstore and can be used without doctor’s instruction.
- Prescription such as naproxen, indomethacin, and ketorolac are prescribed by your doctor after diagnosis.

You can change your lifestyle to reduce the chance of getting muscle contraction tension headache.
Stress can lead to several physical health and mental health problems, including muscle contraction tension headache. Thus, control your life and reduce stress. Do not let it affect you too often. You can control your stress by organizing your life and go ahead your plan. You should also spend time relaxing and refreshing your mind. If you cannot solve the problems, just go through it or get back. Sometimes, advice from a psychologist may be helpful.
Physical activities are good. Some exercises such as cycling or swimming, or walking can help improve your overall health. Go around your neighborhood or walk to the park can also help relax your mind.
Eat healthily and take care of your body
Eat more fruits and vegetables. These foods can help you keep a healthy body. You should also consider your alcohol consumption. And if you are smoking, just quit it. Smoking can lead to several serious diseases.
Adjust your posture
Good posture is important. It prevents muscles from tensing. When you sit, keep your head straight between shoulders and do not bend your head forward.
Muscle contraction tension headache is common. You may suffer this condition some time in your life. Although it can cause pain and discomfort, most cases can get well without treatment. However, you should see a doctor if your headache is too annoying.
