How to Manage Stress at Work


Everyone who has ever got a job, at some point, felt the pressure of work-related stress. Any job can have stressful factors even if you enjoy what you are doing. For instance, you may experience pressure to finish a task before the deadline or to fulfill a challenging obligation in the short-term. As work stress becomes chronic, it can be harmful to both physical and mental health.

Unfortunately, such long-term stress is too popular, in fact, you can’t always run away from the tensions that occur on the job. Yet you can take steps as listed below to manage work-related stress.

Develop healthy responses

Instead of attempting to fight stress with bad mood food such as fast food or alcohol, try your best to make healthy choices when you feel the tension rise. Exercise is also a great stress reliever. Yoga or meditation can be an excellent choice, but any form of physical exercise is beneficial. Also remember to make time for hobbies and favorite activities. Getting enough quality sleep and building healthy sleep habits is also good for effective stress management.

Establish boundaries

Create some work-life boundaries for yourself, which might mean making a rule not to check email from home at night, or not answering the phone during meal time. People have different viewpoints when it comes to how much they combine their work and home life.Therefore, it is advisable to establish some clear boundaries between these areas to lower the potential for work-life conflict and the stress that comes with it.

Take time to recharge

Don’t let your vacation days be a waste of time. Take time to relax and unwind, so that when you come back to work, you might feel refresh and ready to perform at your best. When you are not able to have a vacation, try to get a quick boost by turning off all your electronic devices and focusing your attention on non-work activities for a while.

Learn how to relax

Techniques such as meditation, mindfulness, and deep breathing exercises can be helpful in melting the stress away. You might also enhance the skill of being able to focus purposefully on a single activity without distraction and that you can apply it to many different aspects of your life.

Talk to your supervisor

The purpose of this isn’t to make out a list of complaints, but rather to come up with an effective plan for managing the stress factor you have figured out, so you can perform at your best.

Get some support

Approving help from trusted friends and relatives can improve your stress managing ability. However, whether you continue to feel overwhelmed by work stress, remember to search for medical help such as a counselor, a psychologist, or a psychiatrist, who can help you get better at managing stress and change unhealthy behavior.

In general, excessive stress can interrupt your productivity and performance, it can even have a negative impact on your physical and emotional health. Usually, your ability to handle stress can mean the difference between success and failure in any kind of work. You can’t control everything in your work environment, yet that doesn’t mean you are helpless and powerless.
