A food allergy occurs soon after you eat a certain food and your body immune system mistakenly identifies it as something harmful. Food allergies appear at any age but babies and children are more likely to suffer from it. An allergy to certain foods can happen even when you have eaten them for years without any reaction. Let’s dig up some information about the common food allergies.

Foods that causes allergies

While any kind of food can cause an allergic reaction, here are nine major types of food that are responsible for food allergies.

  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts (such as walnuts, pine nuts, and almonds)
  • Soy
  • Shellfish
  • Fish
  • Wheat (and other grains with gluten, such as rye, oats, barley)
  • Fruit and vegetable pollen (cause oral allergy syndrome)

Less common triggers might surprise you .

  • Gelatin
  • Corn
  • Meat (such as beef, chicken, pork, and mutton)
  • Spices (like garlic, mustard, coriander)
  • Seeds (include sesame, poppy, and sunflower)

People who are allergic to a specific food may also possibly have a reaction to related foods. For example, who is allergic to shrimp may react to crab and lobster. And person allergic to one tree nut may experience the reaction to other nuts.

Milk allergies

Milk allergy is one of the most common food allergies, especially in children. The two main proteins that bring about the reaction is casein and whey, which have in cow’s milk. Not only cow’s milk can cause allergy but also milk from buffalo, sheep, goats, buffalo and other mammals do. Less commonly milk can generate reaction is soy milk. A milk allergy differs from lactose intolerance, plus, requires different treatment.

Egg allergies

Children are most likely to be allergic to egg. The body’s immune system overreacts only to egg whites or only to yolks or even both. People allergic to chicken eggs may also be allergic to other types of eggs, such as duck, goose, quail or turkey. Overtime, egg allergies may disappear completely, however, some people may remain allergic to eggs for their whole lives.

Peanut allergies

Peanut allergies are considered serious, because they are lifelong in many people. Unlike other food allergies may outgrow over time (such as egg, milk, wheat and soy allergies).

Even an accidental expose from peanut allergies can occur anytime in someone’s life. The best way to prevent a reaction in someone with a nut allergy is to avoid peanuts and tree nuts. They should try to avoid eating nuts as well as eating any foods that might contain peanuts as ingredients.

Fish allergies

People with fish allergies may only be allergic to some types of fish, not all kinds. Fish allergy can happen at any age. Normally people get the allergic reaction after they eat fish, but in some cases, their immune systems overreact by touching fish or breathing in vapors from cooking fish. Fish allergies are usually a lifelong disorder.

Symptoms of food allergies

Symptoms of food allergies may range from mild to severe. They usually occur within a few minutes to over several hours after eating a certain food.

Mild symptoms of food allergy may be the followings:

  • Swollen, dry, or itchy skin
  • Stuffy or running nose, sneezing
  • Itchy, watery, red eyes
  • Itchy mouth or inside your ear
  • Cramps, throwing up, or diarrhea

Severe symptoms of food allergic reaction may include:

  • Difficult breathing or swallowing
  • Swollen lips, tongue or throat
  • Feeling weak or faintness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Pain in chest or a weak heartbeat

Sometimes the symptoms affect your body seriously that they may become deadly. This type of reaction is called anaphylaxis. Seek to an emergency medical help immediately to have the accurate treatment.
