When you experience pain or swelling in your throat, you have a sore throat, which can be a symptom of a pollen allergy. A pollen allergy stimulates the release of histamine, resulting in inflammation and irritation of the throat. Your throat becomes  sensitive and agitated. This condition is kindly dangerous, and many people are suffering from it. Let’s have a clearer look to understand this situation.

    Throat discomfort

Throat discomfort is considered the most common symptom of a pollen allergy. If left untreated for a long time, your throat can swell up, making it hard for you to swallow food and saliva. The sore can turn to pain and hurt the voice box. Throat irritation caused by a pollen allergy can make the throat susceptible to a secondary infection like strep throat. This is more difficult to cure.

    Post-nasal drip

A pollen allergy can also increase the production of mucus inside the sinuses. It consequently results in excessive drainage in the back of your throat. The mucus will accumulate over time, causing throat irritation. When left in the throat for an extended period of time, the mucus can speed up the growth of bacteria, and lead to the culprit of throat infection. If you notice the thick, dark yellow-colored mucus coming from your throat, it is advisable to visit a doctor. It may be a warning sign of a secondary infection.

    Abnormal voice change

A sore throat coming from a pollen allergy can result in hoarseness and wheezing. As the throat becomes extremely irritated, the larynx, or also known as the voice box, is directly influenced, causing hoarseness. Hoarseness is defined as a scratchy voice and/or the inability to articulate clear and precise sounds. Similarly, wheezing may develop as a complication of a sore throat caused by a pollen allergy. This happens as a combination of throat inflammation and asthmatic reactions. Wheezing refers to the high-pitched sound produced when the airways are restricted. If wheezing comes with breathing difficulties, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Your can avoid pollen allergies by limiting your exposure to pollen to the highest possible extent. If you have already had allergic reactions, you can use antihistamine drugs to relieve the symptoms. If your sore throat persists, you need to visit your doctor for a full analysis since it may be an alarming sign of a more serious underlying condition. Do not overlook your sore throat, even if the discomfort is minor. Treat it at the first signs and symptoms will save you a whole lot of trouble.
