Uses

What is Ciloxan® (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic) used for?

Ciloxan® is commonly used for treatment these eye and ear problems:

  • Bacterial infections of the eye (conjunctivitis)
  • Bacterial infections of the eyelids (blepharitis)
  • Ulcers on the front part of the eye (corneal ulcers)
  • Acute otitis externa

Ciloxan® may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How should I take Ciloxan® (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic)?

Ciloxan® eye drops

  • Wash your hands.
  • Wipe your eyes with a clean tissue to clear any residual wateriness or discharge.
  • Take the lid off the bottle.
  • Tip your head back.
  • Gently pull down your lower eyelid and look up.
  • Hold the dropper or bottle above the eye and gently squeeze one drop onto the inside of the lower eyelid, taking care not to touch the eye or eyelashes with the dropper or bottle.
  • Blink your eyes so the liquid spreads over the surface of the eyeball.
  • Wipe away any excess liquid with a clean tissue.
  • Replace the lid of the bottle.
  • Take care not to touch the tip of the bottle or dropper with your fingers. If the dropper is separate don’t put it down on any surface.

Ciloxan® ear drops

  • The bottle should be shaken well before use.
  • After cap is removed, if tamper evident snap collar is loose, remove before using product.
  • The user should be instructed to warm the bottle just before use by holding it in the palm of the hand for a few minutes to prevent any unpleasant sensation associated with the cold suspension coming into contact with the ear.
  • With head tilted, instill the drops into the affected ear. Keep the head tilted on its side for around 5 minutes to enable the drops to penetrate into the external auditory canal. Repeat if necessary in the other ear.
  • To prevent contamination of the dropper tip and solution, care must be taken not to touch the auricle or the external ear canal, and surrounding areas, or other surfaces with the dropper tip of the bottle. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.

Ciloxan® eye ointment

  • Wash your hands.
  • Take the lid off the ointment.
  • Tip your head back.
  • Gently pull down your lower eyelid and look up.
  • Hold the tube above the eye and gently squeeze a 1cm line of ointment along the inside of the lower eyelid, taking care not to touch the eye or eyelashes with the tip of the tube.
  • Blink your eyes to spread the ointment over the surface of the eyeball.
  • Your vision may be blurred when you open your eyes. Do not rub your eyes. The blurring will clear after a few moments if you keep blinking.
  • Wipe away any excess ointment with a clean tissue.
  • Replace the lid of the tube.
  • Take care not to touch the tip of the tube with your fingers.

How do I store Ciloxan® (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic)?

Ciloxan® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Ciloxan® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Ciloxan® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Ciloxan® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Precautions & warnings

What should I know before using Ciloxan® (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic)?

Consult with your doctor or pharmacist, if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because, while you are expecting or feeding a baby, you should only take medicines on the recommendation of a doctor.
  • You are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, such as herbal and complementary medicines.
  • You have allergy with any of active or inactive ingredients of Ciloxan® or other medications.
  • You have any other illnesses, disorders, or medical conditions.
  • You have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy:

There are no adequate studies in women for determining risk when using this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Please always consult with your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before taking this medication. This medication is pregnancy risk category C, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

  • C=There may be some risk
  • D=Positive evidence of risk
  • X=Contraindicated
  • N=Unknown

Breastfeeding:

Not known if crosses into breast milk; using in nursing women with caution.

Side effects

What side effects can occur from Ciloxan® (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic)?

Here are common side effects:

  • Eye discomfort (e.g., stinging, burning or gritty feeling in the eye, irritation)
  • Eye redness
  • White deposits of the medicine on the surface of the eye
  • Unusual taste in the mouth
  • Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue)

Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Interactions

What drugs may interact with Ciloxan® (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic)?

Ciloxan® may interact with other drugs that you are currently taking, which can change how your drug works or increase your risk for serious side effects. To avoid any potential drug interactions, you should keep a list of all the drugs you are using (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. For your safety, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any drugs without your doctor’s approval.

Here are some interactions between Ciloxan® with other medications:

  • Ciloxan® may elevate the plasma concentrations of theophylline.
  • Ciloxan® may interfere with the metabolism of caffeine.
  • Ciloxan® may enhance the effects of the oral anticoagulant, warfarin, and its derivatives.
  • Ciloxan® has been associated with transient elevations in serum creatinine in patients receiving cyclosporine concomitantly.

Does food or alcohol interact with Ciloxan® (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic)?

Ciloxan® may interact with food or alcohol by altering the way the drug works or increase the risk for serious side effects. Please discuss with your doctor or pharmacist any potential food or alcohol interactions before using this drug.

What health conditions may interact with Ciloxan® (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic)?

What is the dose of Ciloxan® (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic) for an adult?

Ciloxan® eye drops

  • Infections of the eyes or eyelids:
  • The drops only need to be applied during the day.
  • One or two drops should be put in the affected eye(s) four times a day.
  • In severe infections: one or two drops every two hours during waking hours for the first two days and then reduce application to four times a day for the rest of the course.
  • Corneal ulcers:
  • The drops should be applied throughout the day and night as follows.
  • On the first day, put two drops into the affected eye(s) every 15 minutes for the first six hours and then two drops into the affected eye(s) every 30 minutes for the remainder of the day.
  • On the second day, put two drops in the affected eye every hour.
  • On the third to the fourteenth day, put two drops in the affected eye(s) every four hours.
  • Acute otitis externa:
    • The dose is 4 drops of Ciloxan® in the ear canal twice daily for adults.
    • For patients requiring use of an otowick, the dose can be doubled for the first administration only.

Ciloxan® eye ointment

  • Infections of the eyes or eyelids:
  • The ointment only needs to be used during the day.
  • It should be applied into the affected eye(s) three times a day for two days, then twice a day for a further five days.
  • Corneal ulcers:
  • The ointment should be applied throughout the day and night as follows.
  • Apply the ointment into the affected eye(s) every one to two hours for the first two days and then every four hours for a further 12 days.

What is the dose of Ciloxan® (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic) for a child?

Ciloxan® ear drops

Acute otitis externa:

  • The dose is 3 drops of Ciloxan® in the ear canal twice daily for children.
  • Safety and effectiveness in children below 1 year of age have not been established.

How is Ciloxan® (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic) available?

Ciloxan® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

  • Ciloxan® eye/ear drops: 0.3% ciprofloxacin
  • Ciloxan® eye ointment: 0.3% ciprofloxacin

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

It is also important to carry a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medicines you are taking with you in case of emergencies.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Ciloxan®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
