What is Vaporub® (camphor and menthol topical) used for?

Camphor is a mild pain reliever. Menthol is either manmade or made from the extracts of mint oil. Menthol provides a cooling sensation when applied to the skin.

Vaporub® is commonly used to relieve minor muscle or joint pain. This medicine may also be used as a chest rub to soothe chest congestion and relieve cough caused by the flu or common cold.

Vaporub® may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

How should I take Vaporub® (camphor and menthol topical)?

Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Wash your hands before and after applying this medicine.

For your first use, apply only to a small skin area to test how your skin reacts to the medicine.

Camphor and menthol can cause a burning or cold sensation, which is usually mild and should lessen over time with continued use. If this sensation causes significant discomfort, wash the skin with soap and water.

Do not use on sunburned, windburned, dry, chapped, irritated, or broken skin. Do not cover treated skin with a bandage or expose it to heat from a hot tub, heating pad, or sauna.

Do not apply this medicine within 1 hour before or 30 minutes after you take a bath or shower.

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 7 days of treatment, or if you have a fever with a headache, or a skin rash. Also call your doctor if you still have pain, or if the pain goes away and then comes back within a few days.

How do I store Vaporub® (camphor and menthol topical)?

Vaporub® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Vaporub® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Vaporub® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Usual Adult Dose for Dermatitis

Camphor-menthol topical ointment: Apply topically 3 to 4 times daily for not more than 7 days.

Camphor-menthol 0.5%-0.5% topical lotion: Topically 2 to 3 times daily.

Camphor-menthol topical 4.8%-2.6% ointment: Apply topically up to 3 times daily.

Camphor-menthol topical 9%-1.3% ointment: Apply topically not more than 3 to 4 times daily for not more than 7 days.

What is the dose of Vaporub® (camphor and menthol topical) for a child?

Usual Pediatric Dose for Dermatitis

Camphor-menthol topical ointment: 2 years or older: Apply topically 3 to 4 times daily for not more than 7 days.

Camphor-menthol 0.5%-0.5% topical lotion: 2 years or older: Apply topically 2 to 3 times daily.

Camphor-menthol topical 4.8%-2.6% ointment: 2 years or older: Apply topically up to 3 times daily.

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Vaporub®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
