What is Tilcotil® (tenoxicam) used for?
Tilcotil® is commonly used for relieving the inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis (a type of arthritis involving the spine), tendonitis (inflammation of a tendon), bursitis (inflammation of a bursa, a fluid-filled sac located around joints and near the bones), and periarthritis of the shoulders or hips (inflammation of tissues surrounding these joints).
Tilcotil® works by interfering with the production of compounds in the body that cause pain and inflammation. Tenoxicam may begin to work early in the treatment but for certain types of arthritis up to 2 weeks may pass before you notice the full benefits of this medication.
How should I take Tilcotil® (tenoxicam)?
This medication should be taken at the same time each day and immediately after a meal or after food to avoid stomach upset.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
How do I store Tilcotil® (tenoxicam)?
Tilcotil® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Tilcotil® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Tilcotil® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.
You should not flush Tilcotil® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

What should I know before using Tilcotil® (tenoxicam)?
Before using this drug, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to tenoxicam or any ingredients of the medication.
- You are a senior who will be given anesthesia or have surgery.
- You are at risk of increased bleeding.
Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.
Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.
Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, contact your doctor immediately.
This medication passes into breast milk. If you are a breastfeeding mother and are taking tenoxicam, it may affect your baby. Talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breastfeeding.
What side effects can occur from Tilcotil® (tenoxicam)?
Like all medicines, Tilcotil® can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. These most common side effects are usually temporary and rarely require discontinuation of treatment, such as:
- Gastrointestinal irritation
- Loss of appetite
- Dry mouth
- Sleep disorder
If you notice any of these symptoms, you should immediately notify your doctor. He/she may advise you to discontinue treatment with Tilcotil®.
- Swelling of the ankles
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Impaired vision
- Black stools
- Vomiting blood
- Severe stomach pain
- Swelling of the face
- Flu-like symptoms
Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.
What drugs may interact with Tilcotil® (tenoxicam)?
Tilcotil® may interact with other drugs that you are currently taking, which can change how your drug works or increase your risk for serious side effects. To avoid any potential drug interactions, you should keep a list of all the drugs you are using (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. For your safety, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any drugs without your doctor’s approval.
Products may interact with this drug, including:
- Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)
- Alpha-1 blockers (e.g., doxazosin, tamsulosin, terazosin)
- Calcium channel blockers (e.g., nifedipine, verapamil)
- Diabetes medications (e.g., sulfonylureas, such as glyburide and gliclazide)
- Diuretics (water pills; e.g., furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide)
- Evening primrose
- Ginkgo biloba
- High blood pressure medications (e.g., irbesartan, losartan)
- NSAIDs (e.g., celecoxib, diclofenac, ibuprofen, indomethacin)
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (e.g., citalopram, fluoxetine, sertraline)
- Sulfonamide-containing medications (e.g., sulfamethoxazole)
Does food or alcohol interact with Tilcotil® (tenoxicam)?
Tilcotil® may interact with food or alcohol by altering the way the drug works or increase the risk for serious side effects. Please discuss with your doctor or pharmacist any potential food or alcohol interactions before using this drug.
What health conditions may interact with Tilcotil® (tenoxicam)?
Tilcotil® may interact with your health condition. This interaction may worsen your health condition or alter the way the drug works. It is important to always let your doctor and pharmacist know all the health conditions you currently have.
Tell your doctor if you have these health conditions:
- Kidney failure
- An active inflammatory disease involving the stomach or intestine (e.g., ulcerative colitis)
- An active stomach or intestinal ulcer
- An acute asthmatic attack
- Rhinitis (inflammation of the inner lining of the nasal passage)
- Other allergic reactions caused by ASA (acetylsalicylic acid)
- Heart attack

What is the dose of Tilcotil® (tenoxicam) for an adult?
