Uses

What is Surfak® (docusate) used for?

Surfak® is commonly used to treat or prevent constipation, and to reduce pain or rectal damage caused by hard stools or by straining during bowel movements.

Surfak® may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How should I take Surfak® (docusate)?

Take Surfak® by mouth with a full glass of water, do not chew or break it, swallow the whole capsule.

Follow all directions on your prescription label.

Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Surfak®.

How do I store Surfak® (docusate)?

Surfak® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Surfak® in the bathroom or the freezer. What should I know before using Surfak® (docusate)?

    Side effects

    What side effects can occur from Surfak® (docusate)?

    Seek medical attention immediately if any of the side effects become severe and you have one of following symptoms:

    • You have rectal bleeding or failure to have a bowel movement; allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue).
    • You need to use a laxative for more than 1 week.

    Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

    If you miss a dose of Surfak®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
