What is Selsun® (Selenium sulfide) used for?

Selsun® is commonly used for relieving itching, flaking of the scalp, and removes the dry, scaly particles that are commonly referred to dandruff or seborrhea (inflammation of the scalp due to excessive oil secretion). It is also used to treat tinea versicolor, a fungal infection of the skin.

This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How should I take Selsun® (Selenium sulfide)?

To use Selsun® shampoo properly:

  • Selsun® shampoo may discolor gold, silver or other metallic jewelry, it is important to remove all jewelry before using the shampoo.
  • Massage the shampoo into wet scalp. Allow to remain on the scalp for two to three minutes. Rinse scalp thoroughly. Repeat application and rinse thoroughly. After shampoo, wash hands well. For best results, use at least twice a week or as directed by doctor.
  • Read product label for detail information.

To use Selsun® conditioner properly:

  • After washing your hair with Selsun® shampoo, apply Selsun® conditioner on the hair.
  • Avoid Selsun® conditioner contact with the scalp.
  • Massage your hair for a few minutes then rinse with water.

How do I store Selsun® (Selenium sulfide)?

Selsun® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Selsun® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Selsun® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Selsun®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
