What is Provironum® (mesterolone) used for?

Provironum® is commonly used for:

  • Reduced efficiency in middle and advanced age (such as androgen deficiency, lack of concentration, weak memory, disturbances of libido and potency, irritability, sleep disturbances, depressive moods and general vegetative complaints)
  • Potency disturbances
  • Hypogonadism
  • Infertility

How should I take Provironum® (mesterolone)?

  • Follow all directions given to you by your doctor or pharmacist carefully. They may differ from the information contained in this leaflet.
  • If you do not understand the instructions printed on the pharmacist label, ask your doctor or pharmacist for help.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water.
  • Taking it at the same time each day will have the best effect. It will also help you remember when to take it. It does not matter if you take this medicine before or after food.

How do I store Provironum® (mesterolone)?

Provironum® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Provironum® in the bathroom or the freezer. Side effects

What side effects can occur from Provironum® (mesterolone)?

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any of the following and they worry you:

  • Headache
  • Fluid retention
  • Breast enlargement
  • Increased sexual drive
  • Psychiatric disturbances (such as depression, aggression, increased or decreased energy levels, elation or irritability)
  • Acne
  • Excessive hairiness
  • Premature puberty
  • Stunted growth

Tell your doctor immediately, or go to Accident and Emergency department at your nearest hospital if you notice any of the following:

  • An enlarged prostate (such as changes in urination, or blood in the urine or ejaculate)
  • Unwanted, frequent or prolonged and painful erections
  • Severe stomach pain or tenderness

Hormonal substances such as Provironum® may quicken the growth of existing hormone dependent tissues and tumors. If you are over 65 years of age, you may have an increased risk of developing prostatic hyperplasia (enlargement of the prostate) and prostatic cancer.

Provironum® may interact with other drugs that you are currently taking, which can change how your drug works or increase your risk for serious side effects. To avoid any potential drug interactions, you should keep a list of all the drugs you are using (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. For your safety, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any drugs without your doctor’s approval.

    What is the dose of Provironum® (mesterolone) for an adult?

    Reduced efficiency and potency disturbances

    Commencement of treatment: 1 tab 3 times daily. The dose may be reduced after a satisfactory clinical improvement.

    Continuation of treatment: 1 tab once or twice daily.

    According to the type and severity of the complaints, the dose for further treatment is to be adjusted to individual requirements. Continuous treatment over a period of several months is recommended.

    Hypogonadism requires continuous therapy

    Development of secondary male sex characteristics: 1-2 tab 3 times daily for several months.

    Maintenance dose: 1 tab 2-3 times daily will often be sufficient.

    Infertility

    Improvement of sperm quantity and quality: 1 tab 2-3 times daily for a cycle of spermatogenesis, for about 90 days. If necessary, treatment is to be repeated after an interval of several weeks.

    To achieve a higher fructose concentration in the ejaculate, in cases of postpubertal Leydig-cell insufficiency, 1 tab twice daily over several months.

    What is the dose of Provironum® (mesterolone) for a child?

    The dosage has not been established in pediatric patients. It may be unsafe for your child. It is always important to fully understand the safety of the drug before using. Please consult with your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

    How is Provironum® (mesterolone) available?

    Provironum® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

    • Tablets; Oral; Mesterolone 25 mg

    What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

    In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

    What should I do if I miss a dose?

    If you miss a dose of Provironum®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
