What is Pontalon® (mefenamic acid) used for?

Pontalon® is commonly used for relieving pain and reducing inflammation, such as headaches, menstrual cramps, muscle aches, dental pain and athletic injuries.

How should I take Pontalon® (mefenamic acid)?

Take Pontalon® as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

Take mefenamic acid by mouth. It may be taken with food if it upsets your stomach.

Taking it with food may not lower the risk of stomach or bowel problems (e.g., bleeding, ulcers). Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you have persistent stomach upset.

Take Pontalon® with a full glass of water (8 oz/240 mL) as directed by your doctor.

How do I store Pontalon® (mefenamic acid)?

Pontalon® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Pontalon® in the bathroom or the freezer. Duration of therapy: 2 to 3 days.

Pain – 14 years or older:

Initial dose is 500 mg orally once.

Following initial dose: 250 mg orally every 6 hours as needed.

Duration of therapy: Usually not to exceed 1 week.

Dysmenorrhea – 14 years or older:

Initial dose is 500 mg orally once.

Following initial dose: 250 mg orally every 6 hours as needed.

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Pontalon®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
