What is Mucolator® (Acetylcystein) used for?

Mucolator® is commonly used for:

  • Treatment of abnormal, sticky, or thick mucus secretions in various lung problems (e.g., chronic emphysema, bronchitis, asthmatic bronchitis, pneumonia, during anesthesia, following surgery or various lung tests)
  • Antidote for paracetamol poisoning

How should I take Mucolator® (Acetylcystein)?

Use acetylcysteine solution as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

Acetylcysteine solution is inhaled into the lungs using a nebulizer. Your doctor will demonstrate the proper way to use the nebulizer. Be sure to only use the nebulizer recommended by your doctor.

If acetylcysteine solution is used with a face mask, a sticky substance may appear on the face. The stickiness can be removed by washing the face with water.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use acetylcysteine solution.

How do I store Mucolator® (Acetylcystein)?

Mucolator® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Mucolator® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Mucolator® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Mucolator® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Side effects

What side effects can occur from Mucolator® (Acetylcystein)?

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome:

  • Cold, clammy skin
  • Drowsiness
  • Fever
  • Inflammation of the mouth or tongue
  • Nausea
  • Runny nose
  • Vomiting

Seek medical attention right away if any of these severe side effects occur:

  • Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue)
  • Mouth sores
  • Throat and lung irritation

What is the dose of Mucolator® (Acetylcystein) for an adult?

Chronic and acute bronchopulmonary disease, pulmonary complications of cystic fibrosis 

The recommended dose is 200 mg tds.

Paracetamol poisoning 

The initially dose is 140 mg/kg w/in 24 hr, followed by maintenance dose of 70 mg/kg/day.

What is the dose of Mucolator® (Acetylcystein) for a child?

The recommended dose is 2-6 yr 200 mg bd.

How is Mucolator® (Acetylcystein) available?

Mucolator® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

  • Mucolator® powder for oral susp 200 mg

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Mucolator®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
