Uses

What is Mobic® (meloxicam) used for?

Mobic® is commonly used for treating rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. It reduces pain, swelling, and stiffness of the joints.

Mobic® is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Meloxicam can reduce hormones that cause inflammation and pain.

How should I take Mobic® (meloxicam)?

Take this Mobic® by mouth as directed by your doctor with or without food, usually once daily. Drink a full glass of water (240 milliliters) with it unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking this drug.

Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose.

If stomach upset occurs while taking this medication, take it with food, milk, or an antacid.

Mobic® can increase your risk of fatal heart attack or stroke, especially if you use it long term or take high doses, or if you have heart disease. Do not use this medicine just before or after heart bypass surgery

How do I store Mobic® (meloxicam)?

Mobic® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Mobic® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Mobic® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

What should I know before using Mobic® (meloxicam)?

Before using this drug, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because, while you are expecting or feeding a baby, you should only take medicines on the recommendation of a doctor.
  • You are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, such as herbal and complementary medicines.
  • You have allergy with any of active or inactive ingredients of Mobic® or other medications.
  • You have any other illnesses, disorders, or medical conditions.

Mobic® can increase your risk of fatal heart attack or stroke, especially if you use it long term or take high doses, or if you have heart disease. Do not use this medicine just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).

Mobic® may also cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal. These conditions can occur without warning while you are using Mobic®, especially in older adults.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using any other cold, allergy, or pain medicine. Medicines similar to meloxicam are contained in many combination medicines. Check the label to see if a medicine contains an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or naproxen.

Mobic® can increase your risk of fatal heart attack or stroke, especially if you use it long term or take high doses, or if you have heart disease. Even people without heart disease or risk factors could have a stroke or heart attack while taking this medicine.

Do not use this medicine just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).

Mobic® may also cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal. These conditions can occur without warning while you are using Mobic, especially in older adults.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Side effects

What side effects can occur from Mobic® (meloxicam)?

Common side effects may include:

  • Upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, heartburn
  • Diarrhea, constipation, gas
  • Dizziness
  • Cold symptoms, flu symptoms

Stop using Mobic® and call your doctor at once if you have:

  • The first sign of skin rash, no matter how mild
  • Shortness of breath (even mild)
  • Swelling or rapid weight gain
  • Signs of stomach bleeding – bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Liver problems: nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, flu-like symptoms, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice
  • Kidney problems: little or no urinating, painful or difficult urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath
  • Low red blood cells: pale skin, feeling light-headed or short of breath, rapid heart rate, trouble concentrating
  • Severe skin reaction – fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Mobic®: sneezing, runny or stuffy nose; wheezing or trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of a heart attack or stroke: chest pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder, sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, feeling short of breath.

Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Interactions

What drugs may interact with Mobic® (meloxicam)?

Mobic® may interact with other drugs that you are currently taking, which can change how your drug works or increase your risk for serious side effects. To avoid any potential drug interactions, you should keep a list of all the drugs you are using (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. For your safety, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any drugs without your doctor’s approval.

Products that may interact with this drug are:

  • Aliskiren, ACE inhibitors: captopril, lisinopril, etc
  • Angiotensin II receptor blockers: losartan, valsartan, etc
  • Cidofovir, lithium, methotrexate (high-dose treatment)
  • “Water pills’ (diuretics such as furosemide)

For Osteoarthritis:

Initial dose: 7.5 mg orally once daily

Initial dose: 7.5 mg orally once daily

Maintenance dose: 7.5 mg orally once daily

What is the dose of Mobic® (meloxicam) for a child?

For Juvenile (children at least 2 years old) Rheumatoid Arthritis:

Greater than or equal to 2 years: 0.125 mg/kg orally once daily

Maximum dose: 7.5 mg orally daily

How is Mobic® (meloxicam) available?

Mobic® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

  • Oral suspension: meloxicam 7.5mg in 5Ml
  • Tablets and oral suspension: meloxicam 7.5mg

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Mobic®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
