Know the basics

What is Microlax® used for?

Microlax® is commonly used to empty the large bowel in constipation, or prior to surgical and diagnostic procedures or in obstetrics prior to delivery. The enema acts as a laxative by softening the stools and by its lubricating properties. This medicine is for use in adults and children.

How should I take Microlax®?

  • Twist the seal of the nozzle;
  • Squeeze the tube slightly so that a drop of Microlax® smears the tip and thus makes insertion easier;
  • Insert the nozzle fully into the rectum. In children under 3 years of age, insert only half the length of the nozzle;
  • Squeeze out the contents fully by squeezing the shoulder of the tube. Withdraw the nozzle still squeezing tightly.

How do I store Microlax®?

Microlax® is best stored in the refrigerator. To prevent drug damage, do not freeze. There may be different brands of Microlax® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Microlax® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

As there is no relevant data available to evaluate the potential for foetal malformation or other foetotoxic effects when administered during pregnancy Microlax® Rectal Solution should only be used as directed by a physician at the time of delivery.

It is not known whether sodium citrate, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate are excreted in human milk.

Know the side effects

What side effects can occur from Microlax®?

Prolonged use of Microlax® may lead to:

  • Irritation of the rear passage;
  • Sensitivity reactions (such as a rash) rarely occur;
  • Abdominal pain, anal discomfort;
  • Diarrhoea;
  • Allergic reactions (e.g. hives).

Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

What is the dose of Microlax® for an adult?

For children up to 3 years: half to the mark.

How is Microlax® available?

Microlax® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

  • Rectal solution 5ml.

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services (115) or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Microlax®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
