What is Fioricet® (Butalbital, Acetaminophen and Caffeine) used for?

Fioricet® is commonly used for treating tension headaches which are caused by muscle contractions. Acetaminophen helps to decrease the pain from a headache. Caffeine helps increase the effects of acetaminophen. Butalbital is a sedative that helps to decrease anxiety and cause sleepiness and relaxation.

How should I take Fioricet® (Butalbital, Acetaminophen and Caffeine)?

You should not use Fioricet® if you have porphyria, or if you have recently used alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers, or other narcotic medications.

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as exactly directed and prescribed by your doctor, usually every 4 hours as needed.

Butalbital may be addictive. Do not share Fioricet® with another person, espectially someone with a history of drug abuse or addiction. Selling or distributing Fioricet® is illegal.

If Fioricet® upsets your stomach, take it with food or milk.

How do I store Fioricet® (Butalbital, Acetaminophen and Caffeine)?

Fioricet® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Fioricet® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Fioricet® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Fioricet® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Precautions & warnings

What should I know before using Fioricet® (Butalbital, Acetaminophen and Caffeine)?

Before using this drug, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because, while you are expecting or feeding a baby, you should only take medicines on the recommendation of a doctor.
  • You are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, such as herbal and complementary medicines.
  • You have allergy with any of active or inactive ingredients of Fioricet® or other medications.
  • You have any other illnesses, disorders, or medical conditions.

You should not use Fioricet® if you have porphyria, or if you have recently used alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers, or other narcotic medications.

Do not use Fioricet® if you have taken an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.

Do not take more Fioricet® than is recommended. An overdose of acetaminophen can damage your liver or cause death. Call your doctor at once if you have nausea, pain in your upper stomach, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice (yellowing of your skin or eyes).

In rare cases, acetaminophen may cause a severe skin reaction. Stop taking Fioricet® and call your doctor right away if you have skin redness or a rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There are no adequate studies in women for determining risk when using this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Please always consult with your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before taking this medication. This medication is pregnancy risk category C, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Side effects

What side effects can occur from Fioricet® (Butalbital, Acetaminophen and Caffeine)?

Common side effects may include:

  • Drowsiness, dizziness
  • Feeling anxious or restless
  • Drunk feeling
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)

Stop using this medicine and call your doctor at once if you have:

  • Confusion, seizure
  • Shortness of breath
  • A light-headed feeling, like you might pass out
  • Nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Fioricet®: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

In rare cases, acetaminophen may cause a severe skin reaction that can be fatal. This could occur even if you have taken acetaminophen in the past and had no reaction. Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor right away if you have skin redness or a rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling. If you have this type of reaction, you should never again take any medicine that contains acetaminophen.

Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

For your safety, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any drugs without your doctor’s approval.

  • Sodium oxybate
  • Drugs affecting liver enzymes that remove this medication from your body (such as macrolide antibiotics including erythromycin, cimetidine, disulfiram, valproic acid, fluvoxamine, MAO inhibitors including isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine)
  • Isoniazid
  • Lithium
  • Phenothiazines (such as chlorpromazine)

Acetaminophen 325 mg, butalbital 50 mg, and caffeine 40 mg: 1 or 2 tablet(s), capsule(s), or tablespoonful(s) orally every 4 hours. Maximum daily dose: 6 doses

Acetaminophen 500 mg, butalbital 50 mg, and caffeine 40 mg: 1 tablet or capsule orally every 4 hours. Maximum daily dose: 6 doses

Acetaminophen 750 mg, butalbital 50 mg, and caffeine 40 mg: 1 tablet orally every 4 hours. Maximum daily dose: 5 tablets

If you miss a dose of Fioricet®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
