What is Dramamine® (dimenhydrinate) used for?

Dramamine® is commonly used to treat or prevent nausea, vomiting, and dizziness associated with motion sickness.

Dimenhydrinate may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

How should I take Dramamine® (dimenhydrinate)?

Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

For best results, take dimenhydrinate 30 to 60 minutes before traveling or before any activity that may trigger motion sickness.

You may take dimenhydrinate with or without food.

The chewable tablet must be chewed before you swallow it.

If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time if you have taken dimenhydrinate in the past few days.

How do I store Dramamine® (dimenhydrinate)?

Dramamine® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Dramamine® in the bathroom or the freezer. What should I know before using Dramamine® (dimenhydrinate)?

Before using this drug, tell your doctor if:

Side effects

What is the dose of Dramamine® (dimenhydrinate) for an adult?

Usual Adult Dose for Motion Sickness

Injectable: 50 to 100 mg IM or IV every 4 hours as needed; Maximum Dose: 400 mg within 24 hours.

Oral: Immediate Release: 50 to 100 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed; Maximum Dose: 400 mg within 24 hours.

Extended Release: 100 mg every 8 to 12 hours as needed; Maximum Dose: 300 mg within 24 hours.

Rectal: 50 to 100 mg every 6 to 8 hours as needed.

What is the dose of Dramamine® (dimenhydrinate) for a child?

Usual Pediatric Dose for Motion Sickness

Injectable:

  • Neonate: Contraindicated.
  • Older Than Neonate: 1.25 mg/kg OR 37.5 mg/m2 IM 4 times a day; Maximum Dose: 300 mg per day.

Oral:

  • Under Age 2 Years: Not recommended.
  • Age 2 to 5 Years: 12.5 to 25 mg orally every 6 to 8 hours as needed; Maximum Dose: 75 mg within 24 hours.
  • Age 6 to 11 Years: 25 to 50 mg orally every 6 to 8 hours as needed; Maximum Dose: 150 mg within 24 hours.
  • Age 12 Years and Over: 50 to 100 mg orally every 4 to 6 hours as needed; Maximum Dose: 400 mg within 24 hours.

Rectal:

  • Under Age 2 Years: Contraindicated.
  • Age 2 to 5 Years: 12.5 to 25 mg once; do not repeat dose except on the advice of a physician.
  • Age 6 to 7 Years: 12.5 to 25 mg every 8 to 12 hours as needed.
  • Age 8 to 11 Years: 25 to 50 mg every 8 to 12 hours as needed.
  • Age 12 Years and Over: 50 mg every 8 to 12 hours as needed.

How is Dramamine® (dimenhydrinate) available?

Dramamine® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

  • Injection
  • Oral
  • Rectal

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Dramamine®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
