What is Diaphyllin® (aminophylline) used for?

Aminophylline is used to prevent and treat wheezing, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing caused by asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other lung diseases. It relaxes and opens air passages in the lungs, making it easier to breathe.

Aminophylline is sometimes used to treat breathing problems in premature infants. Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this drug for your baby’s condition.

How should I take Diaphyllin® (aminophylline)?

To take Diaphyllin®,

  • Take aminophylline exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
  • Take each dose with a full glass of water.
  • You can take aminophylline with food to lessen stomach upset.
  • Take your doses at the same time every day to keep a constant level of aminophylline in your blood.
  • Do not crush or chew any extended-release formulation of aminophylline. Swallow the medication whole. It is specially formulated to release slowly in your body. If you do not know whether your medication is an extended-release formulation, ask your pharmacist.
  • Shake the liquid forms of this medication well before use. To ensure that you get a correct dose, measure the liquid with a dose-measuring cup or spoon, not a regular tablespoon. If a spoon or cup is not provided with the medication and you do not have one, ask your pharmacist where you can get one.
  • Insert the suppositories rectally as directed.
  • Do not switch to another brand or a generic form of aminophylline without the approval of your doctor.

How do I store Diaphyllin® (aminophylline)?

Diaphyllin® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Diaphyllin® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Diaphyllin® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

What should I know before using Diaphyllin® (aminophylline)?

Before using Diaphylllin®, tell your doctor:

  • If you are allergic to aminophylline or any other drugs.
  • What nonprescription medications and vitamins you are taking, especially nonprescription medications containing ephedrine, epinephrine, phenylephrine, phenylpropanolamine, or pseudoephedrine. Many nonprescription products contain these drugs (e.g., diet pills and medications for colds and asthma), so check labels carefully. Do not take these medications without talking to your doctor; they can increase the side effects of aminophylline.
  • If you use tobacco products. Cigarette smoking may affect the effectiveness of aminophylline.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Side effects

Does food or alcohol interact with Diaphyllin® (aminophylline)?

Diaphyllin® may interact with food or alcohol by altering the way the drug works or increase the risk for serious side effects. Please discuss with your doctor or pharmacist any potential food or alcohol interactions before using this drug.

Drinking or eating foods high in caffeine, like coffee, tea, cocoa, and chocolate, may increase the side effects caused by aminophylline. Avoid large amounts of these substances while you are taking aminophylline.

What health conditions may interact with Diaphyllin® (aminophylline)?

Diaphyllin® may interact with your health condition. This interaction may worsen your health condition or alter the way the drug works. It is important to always let your doctor and pharmacist know all the health conditions you currently have.

What is the dose of Diaphyllin® (aminophylline) for an adult?

Adults, teenagers, and children above 1 year of age weighing more than 45 kilograms (kg)

At first, 380 milligrams (mg) per day, divided and given every 6 to 8 hours. Your doctor may adjust your dose as needed. However, the total dose is usually not more than 760 mg per day.

Older adults

The dose must be determined by your doctor. However, the total dose is usually not more than 507 milligrams per day, divided and given every 6 to 8 hours.

What is the dose of Diaphyllin® (aminophylline) for a child?

Asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema

Adults, teenagers, and children above 1 year of age weighing more than 45 kilograms (kg)

At first, 380 milligrams (mg) per day, divided and given every 6 to 8 hours. Your doctor may adjust your dose as needed. However, the total dose is usually not more than 760 mg per day.

Children and teenagers 1 to 15 years of age weighing less than 45 kilograms (kg)

Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. At first, the dose is 15.2 to 17.7 milligrams (mg) per kg of body weight per day, divided and given every 4 to 6 hours. Your doctor may adjust your dose as needed. However, the total dose is usually not more than 25.3 mg per kg of body weight per day or 760 mg per day.

Infants younger than 1 year of age

Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

How is Diaphyllin® (aminophylline) available?

Diaphyllin® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

  • Tablet, Extended Release
  • Tablet Aminophylline 240mg
  • Solution 5ml

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Diaphyllin®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
