Uses

What is Cipro® (ciprofloxacin) used for?

Cipro® is commonly used for treating a variety of bacterial infections. Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Cipro® is also used to treat people who have been exposed to anthrax or certain types of plague.

How should I take Cipro® (ciprofloxacin)?

Cipro® is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body but cause serious or disabling side effects. Cipro® should be used only for infections that cannot be treated with a safer antibiotic.

Cipro® may cause swelling or tearing of a tendon, especially if you are over 60, if you take steroid medication, or if you have had a kidney, heart, or lung transplant.

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually twice a day (every 12 hour) in the morning and evening. Take this medicine with water, and drink extra fluids to keep your kidneys working properly.

The tablet is recommended to swallow whole because it may have a bitter taste if you split, chew, or crush it before taking it.

Take this medication at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after taking other products that may bind to it, decreasing its effectiveness.

How do I store Cipro® (ciprofloxacin)?

Cipro® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Cipro® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Cipro® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Cipro® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Avoid caffeine while you are taking Cipro®, because the medication can make the effects of caffeine stronger.

Cipro® may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.

Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicine unless your doctor tells you to.

Avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds. Cipro® can make you sunburn more easily. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when you are outdoors. Call your doctor if you have severe burning, redness, itching, rash, or swelling after being in the sun.
