Uses

What is Cervagem® (gemeprost) used for?

Cervagem® is commonly used for the dilation and softening of the cervix prior to surgical procedures during pregnancy or for the induction of miscarriage.

Your doctor may have prescribed Cervagem® for another reason.

This medicine is available only with a doctor’s prescription.

How should I take Cervagem® (gemeprost)?

Cervagem® is administered by insertion via the vagina by a doctor or nurse.

How do I store Cervagem® (gemeprost)?

Cervagem® is stored in a freezer at below minus 10 degrees C in the original pack in the pharmacy or on the ward.

Once the foil sachet has been opened, any pessary not used within 12 hours should be destroyed.

Precautions & warnings

What should I know before using Cervagem® (gemeprost)?

Before using this drug, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because, while you are expecting or feeding a baby, you should only take medicines on the recommendation of a doctor.
  • You are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, such as herbal and complementary medicines.
  • You have allergy with any of active or inactive ingredients of Cervagem® or other medications.
  • You have any other illnesses, disorders, or medical conditions.
  • Cervagem® is not to be used to soften the cervix or to induce labor in the pregnant woman at term.

    You must not be given Cervagem® after the expiry date (EXP) printed on the pack.

    Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

    There isn’t enough information about the safety of using Cervagem® during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Please always consult with your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before taking Cervagem®.

    Side effects

    What side effects can occur from Cervagem® (gemeprost)?

    Common side effects include:

    • Vaginal bleeding
    • Uterine pain
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Lower abdominal pain
    • Backache
    • Headache
    • Slight fever
    • Flushing
    • Chills
    • Dizziness
    • Irregular heart beats
    • Muscle weakness
    • Shortness of breath

    Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include asthma, wheezing or shortness of breath, swelling of the face, lips or tongue which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing, hives, itching, skin rash or fainting.

    Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

    Health conditions may interact with this drug, include:

    • Given birth more than twice
    • Uterine scarring
    • Cervical narrowing
    • Vaginal bleeding of unknown origin
    • Twin pregnancy
    • Respiratory conditions
    • Cardiovascular disease
    • Elevated intraocular pressure (e.g., as in glaucoma)
    • An infection of the cervix or vagina

    What is the dose of Cervagem® (gemeprost) for an adult?

    Softening & dilatation of cervix

    One pessary to be inserted into the posterior vaginal fornix 3 hours before surgery.

    Therapeutic termination of pregnancy

    One pessary to be inserted into the posterior vaginal fornix at 3 hourly intervals to a maximum of 5 administrations. A second course of treatment may be instituted starting 24 hours after the initial commencement of treatment. If abortion is not well established after 10 pessaries, a further course of Gemeprost treatment is not recommended and alternative means should be employed to effect uterine emptying.

    Intra-uterine fetal death

    One pessary to be inserted into the posterior vaginal fornix at 3 hourly intervals up to a maximum of 5 administrations.

    What is the dose of Cervagem® (gemeprost) for a child?

    The dosage has not been established in pediatric patients. It may be unsafe for your child. It is always important to fully understand the safety of the drug before using. Please consult with your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

    How is Cervagem® (gemeprost) available?

    Cervagem® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

    What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

    In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

    What should I do if I miss a dose?

    If you miss a dose of Cervagem®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
