Uses

What is Celebrex® (celecoxib) used for?

Celebrex® is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Celecoxib works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.

Celebrex® is used to treat pain or inflammation caused by many conditions such as arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and menstrual pain; or hereditary polyps in the colon. It is also used to treat juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in children who are at least 2 years old.

Celebrex® may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How should I take Celebrex® (celecoxib)?

Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Take Celebrex® by mouth with a full glass of water, do not chew or break it, swallow the whole capsule.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use this medication.

How do I store Celebrex® (celecoxib)?

Celebrex® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Celebrex® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Celebrex® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Celebrex® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

What should I know before using Celebrex® (celecoxib)?

Consult with your doctor or pharmacist, if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because, while you are expecting or feeding a baby, you should only take medicines on the recommendation of a doctor.
  • You are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, such as herbal and complementary medicines.
  • You have allergy with any of active or inactive ingredients of Celebrex® or other medications.
  • You have any other illnesses, disorders, or medical conditions.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There are no adequate studies in women for determining risk when using this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Please always consult with your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before taking this medication. This medication is pregnancy risk category C/D at ≥30 weeks of gestation; according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Side effects

What side effects can occur from Celebrex® (celecoxib)?

Celebrex® may cause following side effects, such as:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Skin rash
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat
  • Swelling of the face, fingers, feet, or lower legs
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Indigestion
  • Heartburn
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness

Stop using this medication and get emergency help right away if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Shortness of breath or trouble breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Weakness in one part or side of your body
  • Slurred speech
  • Swelling of the face or throat

Discontinue Celebrex® at first sign of skin rash, or blisters with fever.

Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Interactions

What drugs may interact with Celebrex® (celecoxib)?

Celebrex® may interact with other drugs that you are currently taking, which can change how your drug works or increase your risk for serious side effects. To avoid any potential drug interactions, you should keep a list of all the drugs you are using (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. For your safety, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any drugs without your doctor’s approval.

Some products that may interact with this drug include:

  • Drugs that interfere with Hemostasis (e.g. warfarin, aspirin, SSRIs/SNRIs)
  • ACE Inhibitors, Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARB), or Beta-Blockers
  • Diuretics
  • Digoxin

Does food or alcohol interact with Celebrex® (celecoxib)?

Celebrex® may interact with food or alcohol by altering the way the drug works or increase the risk for serious side effects. Please discuss with your doctor or pharmacist any potential food or alcohol interactions before using this drug.

What health conditions may interact with Celebrex® (celecoxib)?

Celebrex® may interact with your health condition. This interaction may worsen your health condition or alter the way the drug works. It is important to always let your doctor and pharmacist know all the health conditions you currently have.

Especially if you have:

  • Asthma (including a history of worsening breathing after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs)
  • Liver disease
  • Stomach/intestine/esophagus problems (such as bleeding, ulcers, recurring heartburn)
  • Heart disease (such as angina, heart attack)
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Blood disorders (such as anemia, bleeding/clotting problems)
  • Growths in the nose (nasal polyps)
  • Kidney problems

What is the dose of Celebrex® (celecoxib) for an adult?

Osteoarthritis:

The dosage is 200 mg per day administered as a single dose or as 100 mg twice daily.

Rheumatoid Arthritis:

The dosage is 100 to 200 mg twice daily.

Ankylosing Spondylitis:

The recommended dose is 200 mg daily in single (once per day) or divided (twice per day) doses.

If no effect is observed after 6 weeks, a trial of 400 mg daily may be worthwhile.

If no effect is observed after 6 weeks on 400 mg daily, a response is not likely and consideration should be given to alternate treatment options.

Management of Acute Pain and Treatment of Primary Dysmenorrhea:

The dosage is 400 mg initially, followed by an additional 200 mg dose if needed on the first day.

On subsequent days, the recommended dose is 200 mg twice daily as needed.

What is the dose of Celebrex® (celecoxib) for a child?

Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis

The dosage for pediatric patients (age 2 years and older) is based on weight.

  • For patients ≥10 kg to ≤25 kg, the recommended dose is 50 mg twice daily.
  • For patients >25 kg, the recommended dose is 100 mg twice daily.

How is Celebrex® (celecoxib) available?

Celebrex® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

  • Celebrex® 50mg Capsule
  • Celebrex® 100mg Capsule
  • Celebrex® 200mg Capsule
  • Celebrex® 400mg Capsule

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Celebrex®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
