What is carbimazole used for?

Carbimazole belong to a group of medicines called anti-thyroid agents. Carbimazole 5mg Tablets are used to reduce the formation of thyroid hormones in people with an overactive thyroid gland. The condition is called hyperthyroidism.

Carbimazole 5mg Tablets are also used in more serious cases, for example, to restore the normal function of the thyroid before its partial removal by surgery. It may also be used together with other treatments for hyperthyroidism.

How should I take carbimazole?

Always take Carbimazole exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

The tablets should be taken by mouth.

Each day’s tablets may be divided into two (morning and evening) or three daily doses (morning, noon and night).

How do I store carbimazole?

Carbimazole is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store carbimazole in the bathroom or the freezer. Know the side effects

  • sore throat
  • mouth ulcers
  • high temperature or fever
  • significant tiredness
  • increased bruising or bleeding tendency
  • you are feeling generally unwell or think that you may have an infection

In addition, if you experience any of these symptoms while taking Carbimazole 5mg

Tablets you should also contact your doctor immediately:

  • muscle aches or pains
  • yellowing of your skin or whites of your eyes

These could be signs of muscle problems, jaundice or inflammation of the liver and under medical supervision your doctor may want you to stop taking the medicine and carry out some blood tests on you.

Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

What is the dose of carbimazole for an adult?

Adults and the elderly: the usual starting dose is one to three 20mg tablets, or four to twelve 5mg tablets daily. Once control is achieved your doctor will gradually reduce your dose to one to three 5mg tablets each day.

The usual starting dose is three 5mg tablets daily.

How is carbimazole available?

Carbimazole is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services (115) or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of carbimazole, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
