What is Bacitraycin Plus® used for?

Bacitraycin Plus® is commonly used for temporary relief of pain and itching; first aid to help prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns.

Bacitraycin Plus® may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How should I take Bacitraycin Plus®?

Follow all directions on your prescription label.

Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Clean the affected area. Apply a small amount of the product (an amount equal to the surface area of the tip of a finger) on the area 1 to 3 times daily. May be covered with a sterile bandage.

For external use only. Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use this medication.

How do I store Bacitraycin Plus®?

Bacitraycin Plus® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Bacitraycin Plus® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Bacitraycin Plus® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

What should I know before using Bacitraycin Plus®?

Before using this drug, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because, while you are expecting or feeding a baby, you should only take medicines on the recommendation of a doctor.
  • You are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, such as herbal and complementary medicines.
  • You have allergy with any of active or inactive ingredients of Bacitraycin Plus® or other medications.
  • You have any other illnesses, disorders, or medical conditions.
  • You have deep or puncture wounds; animal bites; serious burns; skin irritation.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There are no adequate studies in women for determining risk when using Bacitraycin Plus® during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Please always consult with your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before taking Bacitraycin Plus®. Bacitraycin Plus® is pregnancy risk category C, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Side effects

What side effects can occur from Bacitraycin Plus®?

Bacitraycin Plus® may cause following side effects, such as:

  • Mild stinging, burning, or itching where the medicine is applied.
  • Skin tenderness or redness.
  • Dry white flakes where the medicine was applied.

Seek medical attention immediately if any of the side effects become severe or:

  • Condition worsens.
  • Symptoms persist for more than 7 days or clear up and occur again within a few days.
  • Itching, rash or irritation develops.

Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

What is the dose of Bacitraycin Plus® for an adult?

Adults and children 2 years and older: Clean the affected area and spray a small amount on the affected area not more than 1 to 3 times daily; may be covered with a sterile bandage; if bandaged, let dry first.
