What is Amiklin® (amikacin sulfate) used for?

Amiklin® is commonly used to prevent or treat a wide variety of bacterial infections such as meningitis (infection of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord) and infections of the blood, abdomen (stomach area), lungs, skin, bones, joints, and urinary tract.

Amiklin® may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How should I take Amiklin® (amikacin sulfate)?

Amiklin® is given as an injection at your doctor’s office, hospital, or clinic. Contact your health care provider if you have any questions.

How do I store Amiklin® (amikacin sulfate)?

Amiklin® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Amiklin® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Amiklin® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Side effects

What is the dose of Amiklin® (amikacin sulfate) for an adult?

General Dosing

The recommended dose is 15 mg/kg/day divided IV/IM q8-12hr.

Urinary Tract Infection:

The recommended dose is 250 mg IV/IM q12hr.

Extended Interval Dosing (q24 Hours)

  • First dose: 15 mg/kg IV based on lean body weight.
  • Subsequent doses: consult pharmacist.

Hospital Acquired Pneumonia:

The recommended dose is 20 mg/kg/day IV; may administer with antipseudomonal beta-lactam or carbapenem.

What is the dose of Amiklin® (amikacin sulfate) for a child?

General Dosing:

The recommended dose is 15-22.5 mg/kg/day IV/IM divided 3 times a day.

Aged ≤7 days

  • ≤29 weeks gestational age: The recommended dose is 18 mg/kg IV/IM every 48 hours.
  • 30-33 weeks gestational age: The recommended dose is 18 mg/kg IV/IM every 36 hours.
  • ≥34 weeks gestational age: The recommended dose is 15 mg/kg IV/IM every day.

Aged >7 days

  • 30-33 weeks gestational age: The recommended dose is 15 mg/kg IV/IM every day.
  • ≥34 weeks gestational age: The recommended dose is 15 mg/kg IV/IM every 12-18 hours.

Aged 8-28 days old & <29 weeks gestational age:

The recommended dose is 15 mg/kg IV/IM every 36 hours.

Neonates Aged >28 days old & <29 weeks gestational age:

The recommended dose is 15 mg/kg IV/IM every day.

How is Amiklin® (amikacin sulfate) available?

Amiklin® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

  • Injectable Solution: 50mg/Ml
  • Compounding Powder: 250mg
  • Compounding Powder: 500mg

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Amiklin®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
