What is amebiasis?  

Amebiasis is an infection of colon and sometimes having liver infection. The parasite causes amebiasis as Entamoeba histolytica. Whether in our bodies has to 8 kinds of amoeba, only Entamoeba histolytica cause amebiasis.

How common is amebiasis? 

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 10% of the world has amebiasis. In addition, amebiasis happens in tropical regions, especially those populated areas or living conditions were unsanitary. It occurs in both men and women at any age. Always consult your doctor for more information.

Know the symptoms

What are the symptoms of amebiasis? 

The symptoms usually appear after 2-4 weeks of infection, or maybe a few months to detect the disease.

The common symptoms of amebiasis, include:

  • Diarrhea (10 to 12 times per day);
  • Bloody diarrhea;
  • Stomach cramps;
  • Go defecation viscous sputum;
  • Flatulence;
  • Popular phenomena such as fever, back pain, and fatigue.

When should I see my doctor?

Call your doctor or go to hospital if you have one of the following symptoms:

  • High fever;
  • Bloody diarrhea;
  • Stomach pain;
  • Pain in the stomach on the right side;

Know the causes

What causes amebiasis? 

Amebiasis caused by a parasite called Entamoeba histolytica. This parasite is a major cause of diarrhea, damage to the stomach and intestine.

The parasite infects the body as you drink unhygienic water, or eat contaminated food. Flies, mosquitoes and other insects are also at risk of transmission of parasites.

Amebiasis can spread from anal intercourse with an infected person.

What increases my risk for amebiasis? 

There are many risk factors for amebiasis, such as:

  • Traveling to places where has poor sanitary conditions.
  • Sexual relationships.
  • People with a weakened immune system or are suffering from other chronic diseases.

How is amebiasis diagnosed?   

Your doctor will diagnose amebiasis by examining the history and examination directly to you. At the same time, doctors need at least 3 stool samples to check for parasites by microscopy.

Doctors can use colonoscopy or colonoscopy Sigma to sample gut when other tests are not clear.

How is amebiasis treated? 

Treatment for amebiasis is to have adequate prescription from your doctor. After treatment, your doctor will check your stool sample to ensure that parasites have been discharged from the body.

The drugs may be prescribed include Metronidazole and Iodoquinol. However, these drugs have side effects such as nausea, headache, dry mouth caused, or dark urine.

If drug use Metronidazole and Iodoquinol, you are not drinking alcoholic beverages during treatment.

You should drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. In some severe cases, you may need to water transfers.

Intestinal infection entamoeba go away within two weeks. If histolytica metastasis to other organs, you still have the ability to recover completely if treated promptly and correctly.

What are some lifestyle changes or home remedies help manage amebiasis? 

The following lifestyles and home remedies might help you cope with amebiasis:

  • Take drugs as prescribed were numbered and cooperate with doctors in the treatment process.
  • Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration due to diarrhea.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water to prevent re-infection with parasites.
  • Make sure all foods are cooked before eating.
  • Have safe sex (using condoms).
