What is abortion?

Abortion is the early ending of a pregnancy.  It uses medicine or surgery to remove the embryo or fetus and placenta from the uterus. The procedure is done by a licensed health care professional.

How common is abortion?

What are the symptoms of abortion?

The common symptoms of abortion are bleeding, period-type pain or discomfort. You might experience some bleeding and period-type pains for up to 14 days after any type of abortion.

There may be some symptoms not listed above. If you have any concerns about a symptom, please consult your doctor.

When should I see my doctor?

You should contact your doctor if you have symptoms of the infection after an abortion:

  • High temperature;
  • Vaginal discharge;
  • Abdominal pain that doesn’t improve after taking painkillers.

How to diagnose pregnancy before the abortion?

Your doctor will ask about your medical history and will do a physical exam.  You will have lab tests to make sure that you are pregnant. You may also have an ultrasound to determine how old is your baby.

How does abortion happen?

It will depend on how many weeks pregnant you are.

  • Medical abortion, such as misoprostol, mifepristone, methotrexate.
  • Surgical abortion, such as vacuum aspiration or dilation and evacuation (D&E).

After 9 weeks, surgical abortion is usually the only option.
